Between 1940 and 1945, 600 000 British soldiers died fighting for European liberation against the Nazis, and so, for the liberation of France, this number doesn’t include the dead from injuries.
Vendée keep track of this sacrifice because 203 military from the Commonwealth are buried in 22 districts.
In several places, it is a tradition every 8th May to associate the English military to the French victims of the war ; but hardly anyone knows anything about Lancastria’s tragedy.
So it is desirable that, commemorating the end of the Second World War, we mention jointly the aircraftmen and the castaways, and that their graves be reintegrated in a path of memory, accessible to everybody.
The Office national des anciens combattants et victimes de guerre is the equivalent of the British Legion. So we are legitimate to build this pathway, assisted as we were by the Historical Research Group of Vendée, a French historical society devoted to the military memory. The opening of this route needed the participation of veterans’ clubs, local people, local elective officials, and English community of Vendée.
Thanks to all of you, because your involvement gives meaning to this moment.
L'effort aérien britannique fut important durant
The British air effort was important during the Battle of France. On May 10th 1940, the Royal Air Force committed 416 planes, 92 fighters and 192 bombers. Marshal Barratt commanded the force. Prime Minister Winston Churchill decided to retain the essential of the air fleet in Great-Britain to protect the country against Luftwaffe. From 1May 10th to June 22nd, the Royal Air Force lost 959 planes and 1526 men, dead, wounded or missing, that is slightly above than the loss of life for the French.
Entre la capitulation de
Between the French surrender and the US fully committed to the war, during 18 months, Great-Britain was alone against Hitler. General de Gaulle said : “Heroic and lonely, England embraced the freedom of the world”.
In addition to the men coming from England, Australia, Canada, India, New-Zeland and South Africa, The Royal Air Force incorporated some foreign teams, coming from Belgium, Denmark, Egypt, Greece, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, USA, and from France too. 3 500 Free French served in the RAF, after training with Spitfire, Boston, Short S 20 Sunderland, Vickers Wellington and Halifax ; they belonged to 12 groups. All of these men fought together, as General de Gaulle said : "Side by side, navigating by the same stars”.
Durant toute la guerre,
During the whole war, the RAF Bomber Command had been very efficient to destroy the infrastructure of the enemy. But she had heavy losses… In 1945, the number is almost half what it was in 1940, with about 49 000 dead and a bit less 13 000 destroyed planes.

History is a life lesson. In april 1960, Président Charles de Gaulle went to England for a State visit. In the House of Commons, he declared that because of the heroism of British people and because of his support, “French people do admire and love him”. And his conclusion was : “French and English are meant to work together, to behave together in order to build peace”.
Le 20 janvier 2018, le président de
Recently, on 20th January, the President of the French Republic met the Prime minister of England in Sandhurst, and he said : “… there are two things that nobody can’t change, any vote, any political decision, it’s our common history and our geographical proximity. That makes us to face a community of destiny, and to face geo-strategic threat."
At length, a Franco-British treaty was signed in Lancaster on 29th March, preparing the first binational council of Defense, in the intention to “develop together the systems that need our armed forces” and “to work together to contribute to the security of Europe and of our common allies”, according to the special relationship in the security and the military fields”.
Brotherhood-in-arms is not just the past, it is our present and it is our future…
Now is the time to personalize the mass hommage that we want to pay to our brothers in arms from England and the Commonwealth.
Twice a year, on 8th May and 11th November, the ONACVG organize the “cornflower appeal”, for the Bleuet de France, the social service created in 1924 to care about the wounded soldiers, widows and orphans. It is the equivalent of the "Poppy Appeal" in the Commonwealth.
French people forgot that the original idea of the poppy appeal, and his success in America, England and Canada, came from a French lady, Mrs Anna Guérin, who made war widows and orphans of France to make silk poppies, to be sold around the world, where she was called “the Poppy Lady”... In 1922, she persuaded the British Legion to adopt the idea of the poppy appeal ; and in 1924, two French nurses asked wounded soldiers to make silk cornflowers : then the French abandoned the poppy.
So, poppy and cornflower are linked by our common history, as France and Great-Britain are. That is why, in memory of the brotherhood, we will lay on each gravestone a little bunch of these two flowers, bonded together on a ribbon with the three colours (blue, white and red) that can be found on our flags.
